Shipping Container Sizes — Complete UK Guide

All standard UK container sizes: external dimensions, internal volume, and what each one is used for.

Standard UK shipping containers come in 10ft, 20ft, and 40ft lengths. High cube versions add an extra foot of height. 20ft is the most popular for storage and conversions; 40ft for large storage or multi-room conversions. Phil stocks 10ft, 20ft, and 40ft (including high cube) from his Kent yard.

Which size do you need?

A quick decision guide:

  • Storage under 5 tonnes → 10ft or 20ft

The 20ft is the go-to for most domestic and small commercial storage. Easier to site, easier to deliver, more competitive price.

  • Large storage or workshop → 40ft standard

Double the floor space of a 20ft. Good for plant hire, large stock, site compounds, and workshops where you need to move around.

  • Conversion with ceiling height concern → 40ft high cube

Insulation and lining reduce internal height. The extra 305mm from high cube keeps the finished ceiling at a comfortable height in offices and classrooms.

  • Container home or multi-room → 40ft or two 20fts linked

Single 40ft gives you roughly 24m² of usable floor space. Two 20ft containers linked side by side doubles that. Phil can advise on the structural requirements.

High cube vs standard — what's the difference?

A high cube container is the same length and width as a standard container, but 305mm (1 foot) taller — 2.896m external height vs 2.591m. The internal difference is similar.

That extra height matters most in conversions. Spray foam insulation alone can reduce internal height by 50–75mm. Add a suspended ceiling and you can lose 150mm or more. In a standard 40ft, that can feel cramped. In a high cube, there's enough headroom to absorb the fit-out and still feel like a proper room. See the full 40ft dimensions guide for the exact figures.

Can containers be modified or joined?

Yes. Phil converts containers to spec — doors, windows, insulation, electrics, cladding. Two 20ft containers can be joined to create a 40ft space with a shared internal opening. Three 20fts can be configured as an L-shape or U-shape for larger projects.
